The oldest work of art in the world; international modern art and high-quality architecture: for art fans, the Ulm Innovation Region is really quite a "Mecca". Private collections and superbly equipped museums are well worth a visit. Baroque churches and monasteries, historic cities and castles wait for you to discover them. Theatre and cabaret stages provide as much culture as you can take in, as well as concerts by international artists in the Congress Centrum Ulm. Cabaret and live music can be found in clubs and trendy cafes; in the socio-cultural ROXY, colourful cultural programmes in the towns and districts of the region: you'll have to look for boredom somewhere else.
The region doesn’t only sound good, it is award-winning, in the true sense of the word: In the German orchestral contest in 2012, the Jugendsinfonieorchester (junior symphony) of the Humboldt-Gymnasius (Sinfonietta Ulm) took first place and the “Junge Bläserphilharmonie Ulm” (wind instruments) took second place. Not to forget the “Ulmer Spatzen”, a childrens' choir that achieved the first prize in the German choir contest in 2014.

Emphasis is placed on art and culture in the Ulm Innovation Region. An overview is provided on the following pages:

The Ulmer Museum

The world-famous, over 30,000-year old "Lion man" and many other archaeological finds are verification of past cultures in the Danube valley and on the Swabian mountains. The collections in the Ulmer Museum also comprise of late Gothic and Baroque art as well as documents on Ulm's city history and guild artefacts from the 16th to 19th century. However, it is also a museum of the twentieth century with its superb international "Kurt Fried" collection. Amongst the approximately 400 exhibits you will find works by Frank Stella, Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein, Günther Uecker, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Josef Albers, Max Bill and Gerhard Richter - to name but a few.

The Kunsthalle Weishaupt, Ulm

A private collection of exceptional quality gathered over 40 years featuring modern and contemporary art. The focus of the exhibition, in which art objects from the second half of the 20th century up to the present can be found, changes regularly. The works are presented in a succinct building built especially for them by the architect Wolfram Wöhr.

The Walther Collection, Burlafingen

Modern photography and video art, presented across 1000 square metres of exhibition area. The exhibitions from this international private collection focussing on African and Asian artists as well as on modern photography from Europe and the USA are conceived anew annually based on different themes.

This museum focuses on the Palaeolithic Age settlement existing in Achtal and Blautal. It has been verified by archaeologically-valuable finds from the caves around Blaubeuren. The development of humans, their living conditions and their tools are impressively presented and reconstructed using models. In the "Galerie 40tausend Jahre Kunst", replicas of Ice Age art are presented together with modern artwork.

An art and children's museum containing several adventure rooms. The permanent exhibitions include collections on the graphic artist and sculptor Edwin Scharff and his contemporaries as well as a collection of works by the painter Ernst-Greitlinger. There is a special range of offers for children and teenagers: They are provided with their own exhibitions and the museum workshop.

The Kloster Roggenburg

The Klosterkirche (Monastery church) Mariä Himmelfahrt is one of the most important Rococo buildings in Swabia. The monastery, which was founded in 1126, is run by Premonstratensians and includes today a centre for family, the environment and culture, offering numerous events. In the monastery museum, you can submerge yourself in the Baroque world of a venerable imperial monastery with its gleaming gold monastery treasure and its healing reliquaries.

The Theater Ulm

This three-genre theatre offers numerous concerts in addition to theatre, ballet and musical theatre. The theatre programme also regularly features stagings from the independent theatre and music scene, which have a permanent place in the theatre podium.

The Theaterei Herrlingen

Small, popular and of a high standard: this is the Theaterei (Theatre) Herrlingen, where professional theatre has been played all year round since 1986. In the meantime, the theatre has become a permanent and highly popular component of cultural life close to the double city of Ulm/Neu-Ulm.

The Pfleghof Langenau

The "Pfleghof" has, over the past years, developed into a respected cultural centre, well-known even outside the region's borders. Its profile stands for a selected range of offers; for culture with standards which sometimes also ventures away from well-trodden paths.
